My Screenplay Idea

My Screenplay Idea—

The main character, a girl name Laken, lives in a dystopian future where every single minute, an allocated person dies - something that is not in any sense a random process. Some argue it is God, others don't even consider the reasons for it. Laken can not remember how it came to be this way, failing to recall the moment when everything changed; leaving her completely alone with the knowledge that she must make each and every second she has left count. Despite this, however, there is only so much a person can do when they know oblivion will soon be upon them, causing Laken to find herself counting down the minutes; hoping for just one minute more. The story will be mostly told through flashback, as she works through her memories and remembers how those closest to her had met their inevitable end, helping the audience to align with her as they experience the personal losses she has suffered.

The narrative twist to the story is that in her final minute, Laken remembers everything from when she was a young girl; she remembers the initiative put in place in which everyone received a special implant from the government that would supposedly protect them from all diseases. In reality, this initiative was introduced as a part of a regime made to decrease the over-populated country and kill off undesirables (criminals, terminally ill patients, disabled people - as well as those who continue to be discriminated against in our own society). But the implant went wrong, and began to murder a different person every minute, the chip wired into their brains detonating and killing them off one by one. The only ones who are safe, are the creators themselves. Laken returns from her flashback in a state of defiance, having been given a new reason to keep counting down her minutes. She thinks of all of the things she wants to change, the people she would recruit and then - tragically - she dies, leaving the world in the exact same state as it was in before she was a part of it.

I aim to make this film as a modern and technologically advanced depiction of genocide.
